Software firm Canonical aims to turn your Android device into your one-stop hub for all of your multimedia needs with ‘Ubuntu For Android’. In short, you dock your device and it’s your computer; you pick it up, and it’s your mobile. It’s that Simple!
Have you ever imagine walking into the office, slotting your phone into a dock next to a display, and running your operating system directly from your device. That’s the future that Canonical wants to bring into existence with its latest project, this what the Wired said:
“It’s a convergence of devices,” says Jane Silber, Canonical’s CEO, while Richard Collins, Ubtuntu for Android’s product manager, slots a Motorola Atrix 2 into an unbranded docking unit next to a 15-inch TFT monitor. The screen on the Atrix goes dark, and after a few moments, the display lights up with the familiar desktop of Ubuntu.
Specially designed to coexist with Android on users “multicore smartphones, the latest version of Ubuntu is built to launch the full Ubuntu desktop when the phone is docked with a keyboard and monitor, which the phone runs Android usually.
Ubuntu for Android is not an application – only an operating system that exists alongside Android, activating only when a device is plugged into an external peripheral. That shares a kernel with the main Android OS – which can also access the phone’s hardware and any data stored on the handset, including videos, photographs, contact books, music and movies as well. It all happens by sitting in the background without consuming computing cycles or battery drain.
Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth said, “The desktop is the killer app for quad-core phones in 2012″ in the Canonical announcement. “Ubuntu for Android transforms your high-end phone into your productive desktop, whenever you need it.”
Canonical’s demonstrations of Ubuntu for Android at Mobile World Congress next week will be based on Ubuntu 11.10, or “Oneiric Ocelot,” but Silber said she expects the forthcoming version 12.04, or “Precise Pangolin”–due in April–will more likely provide the foundation for the software that’s ultimately released.
Apart from, this will allow you to run any app you can run on your Desktop Ubuntu, with the Chromium browser, Thunderbird email, music player and Shotwell photo editor as standard. This Ubuntu for Android is compatible with any running Android 2.3 Gingerbread or above, But you won’t just be able to simply download and install it by yourself, while Ubuntu is currently liaising with mobile vendors and carriers to install the software at manufacturing stage.
Well the XDA-developers the custom ROM makers should be able to add the OS in Custom ROM Releases, when Ubuntu code will be open-source. Via
