Three Things To Admit About Samsung’s New Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3

Samsung promised to introduce more metallic devices when it revealed its disappointing Q3 2014 earnings, and just not wasting its time announced Galaxy A5 and A3. Two metallic devices that it calls it “slimmest smartphones to date.”

On Friday, decyining earnings announced two new shiny devices that might help lift the company out of the doldrums. The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 both dispense with the company’s tradition of using plastic body. One with a 6.7mm and the other sports a 6.9mm thin, respectively.

The Galaxy A5 is a higher speced smartphone comes with a five-inch screen, 2GB RAM, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and a 15-megapixel camera on its back.

The Galaxy A3 sports a smaller 4.5-inch screen, with the same processor, but 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel back camera. Both runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat and include support for 4G networks and a microSD card slot included as well.

By comparison, the iPhone 6—Apple’s thinnest smartphone—is 6.9mm, and the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm. And the newest iOS models have an 8MP camera on board.

The two new Galaxy models feature 5-megapixel front cameras for super-sharp selfies, along with a slew of selfie features that Samsung calls Wide Selfie, Palm Selfie, Animated GIF, Beauty Face Features, and Rear-cam Selfie.

Point here is that, Samsung’s revenue has stalled as Apple’s iPhones squeezes it at the top-end of the smartphone market, by 10 to 1 sale. The iPhone launched in Korea, following the huge number of pre-orders in Samsung’s home market, and these new Galaxy A series phones appear to be focused on China and the mid-range market more generally.

The Korean firm says the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 will launch in “select markets including China” in November. Retail at $300 and $150, and have propelled it to No. 3 in the smartphone rankings and wil compete with the Xiaomi’s Redmi 1s and other MIUI handsets as well.
