* First of all ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
* Select settings
* Select Messages
* Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on
* Now Message Popups and Say “Activating”
* Now you can Enter your Receive to Addresses, as an Email Address (Apple ID) or Just iPhone Phone Number or both. So, that the Phone Number part should be Filled.
* If you already Have an Apple ID, and want to use that as your Phone Number, then just Enter It.
* When Completed, you will now have an Active iMessage Account on your iPhone.
* You can toggle various options on and off such as read receipts, etc
* Also you have an option to send as an SMS if iMessage data connection is not available

Setting up iMessage on iPad and iPod Touch with iOS 5 is slightly different that iPhone iMessage Setup. iPad and iPod Touch Do not have Phone Numbers, but they hve a 3G Connection and as well as WiFi too.
* First off ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
* Select settings
* Select Messages
* Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on
* A new box will open asking you for an Apple ID
If you have an Apple ID, then Enter it Here and if not Create New Account and Once Completed you will now have an Active iMessage Account on iPad or iPod Touch.
Important Note – If you only have one iDevice, then you are fine, and if you have Multiple iOS 5 Devices, you will need to think about How to work with Them. You may Need/ Want Separate iMessage Accounts for Each Device ?, No you would want one account that stays in sync across all of your devices.
If you want separate iMessage accounts for each device, you will need to create separate Apple ID’s for each device, these can be created for free in the iMessage original set up screen. Just select Create New Account.
