Just after launching the Galaxy Note 4 in India, Samsung also launched the Tizen-based wearable, The Gear S smartwatch with 3G support. Announced it back in August and ahead of IFA event last month.
Talking about Samsung Gear S, it has a curved AMOLED screen and will be able to live a unfettered life thanks to the built-in 3G and WiFi connectivity. Insert-SIM card and it allows users to make and receive calls via 2G. Unlike other smartwatches, it also offers Bluetooth 4.1 too and got an option that calls can also be forwarded from your smartphone it it is connected.
Samsung notes, that the smartwatch will always remain connected, and can also switch between multiple networks to stay synchronized with the paired smartphone. Its a truly standalone, as it requires one of 20 Samsung handsets during initial setup, and to apparently download apps. Running on the company’s own operating system, Tizen, the Gear S now has a separate slot for SIM card (Nano SIM) on its rear panel along with the heart rate sensor and four pop pins.
The Gear S sports a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360×480 pixels screen. A dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM powers the Samsung Gear S, which also comes integrated with 4GB ROM and is backed by a 300mAh Li-Ion battery, rated to deliver up to 2 days of charge with typical usage.
It has IP67 certification for dust and water resistant and connects to the devices using Bluetooth 4.1 LE. Shows notifications from text messages, social networks, calendars and other applications independently without the need to access the smartphone. Includes Health app, apart from Nike+ Running, to help users track their health statistics.
Samsung is also pointing the S Voice functionality for detecting and voice commands, apart from the onscreen keyboard. With turn-by-turn pedestrian navigation provided via HERE Maps, a 24-hour news service from the Financial Times, and more.
