The video sharing website, Vimeo, was found in 2004 by the two partners and was intended to be a place where people can upload made videos. The site has recently made its seventh birthday and sits in the shadow of Google’s YouTube. The Vimeo name is described as the combination of he words ‘video’ and ‘me’, did you know that!

Vimeo has officially announced that mobile application aimed at devices running under Android or Windows Phone compatible to Kindle Fire tablet as well.

The apps feature the full Vimeo experience, so you’ll be able to like, share, and comment as you do on the web site, in addition to the usual search and video watching. The new applications were released for free for those devices, and follow launch of similar software for Apple’s iPhone handset. With the release of Vimeo app offring a wide range of users the possibility to access high-quality videos while on the go.

Lead mobile developer at Vimeo, Joe Schmitt says:

“With the widespread accessibility of high-quality video on mobile devices and high- speed mobile Internet access, people use their mobile devices not only to watch video but to shoot and then upload video to share online,” and “With mobile devices  making up approximately 15 percent of our site traffic, we recognize the importance of expanding our platforms to allow people to access Vimeo from as many devices as possible.”

Users will be able to watch videos and browse on Vimeo, while having the option to “like” them or post comments.

This video sharing app available as a free download that works on any device running Gingerbread or later of Android device. Vimeo’s offering greets you with a grid of basic options for creating, uploading, and watching video. Vimeo integrated Android’s sharing options, so you’ll be able to send video via any social networks for which you have an app installed. Which doesn’t require any Vimeo account sign ups and logging in giving you the full range of Vimeo features, including commenting, saving, and viewing your watch later list. The new software was released with support for all Android devices based on 2.3 Gingerbread and newer OS flavors, as well as for Amazon Fire.

However, features like adding videos to the Watch later queue will also available, along with the access to member’s Inbox, or prior liked videos.

The Vimeo video sharing app for Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and above are supported. For users of 10-inch tablets, the Android app provides a modified experience that takes advantage of the larger screen real estate to browse other videos, recommendations, collections, and more while a video plays in a separate pane. The new Kindle Fire edition ran smoothly, but doesn’t feature the modified layout you’ll find in larger Android tablets — it’s more like an expanded version of the phone app.

Updates will be coming to iOS “later this month” along with full iPhone redesing and a new iPad-optimized Vimeo app. While the iPhone app also adapts the new grid start screen and in much similar to the Android phone application, Tablet app, the iPad version to take advantage of the larger screen for simultanious browsing and video watching experience.

Apart from this, the Windows Phone Vimeo app gone classic Metro style, and its’ the most innovating app amoing the new lineup. Instead of tapping through menus and videos as you do on iOS and Android, simple swipes move you through search, recommendations, groups, and channels. Each screen subtly varies thumbnails, type size, and layout, so that you can recognize your place in the app’s hierarchy at a glance. Like with iOS and Android, you can shoot and upload video from the Vimeo app, or upload videos that you’ve previously created.

Some of the main features of the new application include:

- Easily upload your raw footage or previously edited creations in HD or SD
- Pause/resume uploads and get reminded when a video is paused
- Replace existing videos
- Edit titles, descriptions, tags, privacy settings, and credits
- Share videos via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, Email, and SMS
- Watch and manage all your Vimeo videos and download them to your camera roll
- Watch videos from your Vimeo Inbox, Watch Later queue, and videos you like
- Easily like videos, comment on videos, and add videos to your Watch Later queue
- Discover new and interesting videos curated by Vimeo Staff
- Add videos to Groups, Channels, and Albums
- Access stats on daily plays, likes, and comments

The major feature of Vimeo is you can view your own profile on these apps and explore other users’ profiles to the extent you can on Vimeo.com. This means that if you find a user whose videos you like, you can’t see what they’re liking — a great way to dig past what algorithmic recommendations suggest.

For now the video editing feature is still an iOS-only option. The app will be available for download today.
