Jailbreaking the Apple TV follows the same pattern as any other iOS device and requires the implementation of a bug into a distributable tool which in turn can deliver the jailbreak payload into the TV device. Once the Apple TV has been jailbroken, it is possible to many additional features and services such as BBC iPlayer, local weather services and purpose built Bluetooth stacks.
All those who are owning an iOS device, they are aware of jailbreaking and familiar with software such as Redsn0w, PwnageTool, Sn0wbreeze. But with a less known tool exists called Seas0nPass, which is specially used to exclusively jailbreak the Apple TV 2G. Seas0nPass creates custom IPSW file which allows a restore based jailbreak as opposed to a ramdisk jailbreak.
Followed the recent release of untethered jailbreak 5.0.1 for all iOS A4 devices, Seas0nPass has been updated to jailbreak untethered for the currently running iOS 4.4.4 Apple TV firmware. This release of the tool includes the untethered exploit provided by pod2g that we have recently seen implemented into the Redsn0w software. To successfully jailbreak an Apple TV using the Seas0nPass tool you will need the following:
- An Apple TV (second generation).
- A micro USB cable.
- A working computer
- Intel based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 or above, or
- PC with Microsoft XP or later.
- The latest version of iTunes (free download from Apple).
Important : In order to jailbreak Apple TV 4.4.4 untethered with Seas0nPass, you’ll need a microUSB cable and a PC running Windows XP (or later) or Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.
Note : If you are planning on updating your Apple TV to the latest build of iOS in order to use Seas0nPass to achieve an untethered jailbreak, it is worth noting that the Plex plugin is currently not supported.
Jailbreak Apple TV 2G On iOS 4.4.4 Using Seas0nPass
Step 1 : Download the latest version of Seas0npass for either Mac or Windows depending on your operating system. When downloaded, unzip the ‘Seas0npass.zip‘ file and launch Seas0nPass.
Step 2 : Open Seas0nPass then select Create IPSW to begin the process. It will take some time to create the custom IPSW.(as told above Seas0npass is based around a restore based jailbreak and therefore requires a custom built IPSW)
Step 3 : Using the miniUSB cable connect your Apple TV device to your Mac/PC. Do not have to power cable connected at this time. When the light on the front of the Apple TV will begin to flash rapidly, it is now time to point the remote at the device and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for seven seconds. Then follow the on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode.
Step 4 : Now iTunes will automatically open and begin the restore process.
Step 5 : After the process is complete, iTunes will confirm the successful restore. Your Apple TV is now jailbroken. You can check this by connecting the device to your television and viewing the interface. In the bottom right hand corner you should see a temporary ‘ Firecore’ logo which confirms a successful restore. Now your Apple TV successfully jailbroken untethered.
This is it, simply followed the how to tutorial correctly and you have successfully jailbroken your Apple TV 4.4.4 untethered using Seas0nPass jailbreak exploit based on Pod2g’s iOS 5.0.1 untether.
