At first when I was a kid and entered into the Internet world downloading music files and videos back in 90s or early 200s, my favorite media player was Winamp, plays different format channels and I used to change the skins of that musical and movie player with an ease. MP3 players and FLV, MP4, AOL, Win and many other formats came, but Winamp grew big enough and quickly enough to get the attentions of AOL, who paid not considerably $80 million for it back in 1999.
Mobile phones also installed Winamp player on their handsets such as Nokia’s Symbian OS, Android’s open-source operating system and even Apple with Winamp iOS app. But with the media player now a fair way down the pecking order that sees apps and services like Apple’s iTunes lead the way entirely.
Today, AOL has officially announced that it will be shutting down Winamp.com and removing the once popular Winamp media player from circulation for good. Really want to be able to use Winamp moving front, we recommend you get the latest build downloaded before December 20th when everything goes away for good.
“Winamp.com and associated Web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, the Winamp media player will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.”
Winamp Media Player was the first things we installed on a machine of a phone or a portable gadget like a Laptop or iMac, but that being said we have to admit to not having use the app for some considerable time. K-Lite Kodec Player, Windows Media Player 11, GOM Player, iTunes, provides most of the functionality that people require. The niche for app like Winamp just continues to get smaller enough. Throw Streaming services such as Spotify and Rdio into the mix, and it’s not difficult to see where it all went wrong for Winamp to shutdown.
Do you think that AOL should shutdown Winamp because of a big rivalry? Thoughts!
